Just saw Weekend last Thursday night (5/19). Great show from that trio, intense as fuck...and they played three new songs. A bit ridiculous to see a few people wanted to slam dance to this, they may as well dove headfirst into their own graves after being hit in the back of the head with a shovel.

Play LOUD.

Some notes:

* Recording taken from tomzero's effort I was trying out some new kit and quite messed up the levels, leaving me with a brickwalled mess. I put my version of the first track so you can hear for yourselves...it would have done in a pinch but I think Tom nailed this one down cold.

* They had these multicolor glow lights which was giving the crew fits, as I'm not sure if they worked that well.

* Intro taped was a slowed down and digitally manipulated Buzzcock's "Ever Fallen In Love".

* Just like in London, SD snapped one of his bass strings after a few songs. I can't imagine the intensity of the playing required on bass to do that.

* New song #1 was a fast, driving song that had Durkan singing "When it's over".

* End Times was introduced as being about what was going down on Saturday night...shit, we're still here.

* New song #2 was a slower one that started with a kick/tom pattern and a echoey bass line, and ghostly vocals. Very Abecedarians like, whom I've not seen anyone compare them to yet. Ends in a maelstorm of guitar and cymbals.

* After this song, SD asks everyone "So what are you gonna do on Saturday"? Some joker from the crowd responds, "Smoke weed!". Shaun then replies, "Smoke weed? Man...you don't think much of yourselves. The world's going to end, weed's is probably the last drug I would do. I would smoke black crayons, because you know that shit is the hardest."

* New song #3 was another fast one that starts out like Joy Division's Isolation and has a bassline cribbed from mid-era New Order. I want to call this song "Hazel" because that name is repeated throughout the song...it's probably the most straightforward song I've heard them do, and was definitely my favorite of the new stuff.

* Ending a blur with Monday Morning / Monongah, WV / Coma Summer.

* Unlike my initial reports, Slow wasn't one of the new songs performed, but you can listen to here...think this was from their Part Time Punks broadcast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1kDdnEIgFI

[Visuals assembled by Moko117 from Carnival Of Souls...which fits perfectly with the song.]

There were two opening acts. First up was a one-man operation called Jealousy who played pre-recorded drones along with his bass and undecipherable vocals. It's actually pretty good, this was the second time we'd see them/him live, you can dig out the first recording on my blog if you want to hear it.

Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NQ333S4J

Second was an outfit called Clipd Beaks that sounded like a mutant Crispy Ambulance / Biting Tongues blend but less formed.
Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OFVLAG1X

Jealousy was from Tom's recording, while Clipd Beaks was from mine, which for this particular group, was servicable.

I also discovered that prior to Weekend, Shaun Durkan and Taylor Valentino had played in an outfit called "We Followed Tigers", with one Joe Lippi on bass.

They had two EPs released back in 2003-2004...I'd describe their sound as "math rock", but you can definitely hear the glimmerings of the Weekend sound.
